Don’t know your podcasting from your vodcasting? Confused as to the meaning of search engine optimisation? And what exactly is a blog? Or blogging? Or the blogosphere?

Here for the first time, in our fabulous Online PR and Social Media Glossary (phew), are our slightly tongue-in-cheek definitions for all the latest buzzwords doing the rounds.

(And writing them kept the immediate future team amused for at least a whole afternoon!)

Term Definition
Hitsdon’t refer to the number of people that have visited your site. Hits actually refer to the number of items that make up that page. So four pictures, text and a graphic would be six items or six hits. So when someone says ‘we got 5 million visitors last week’ chances are they didn’t.
 
Home pageThe home page is the first page of your website and it’s where you tell your visitor all about the benefits of your product or service. If you do nothing else, make sure your home page is fantastic. As Dorothy said ‘there’s no page like the home page’. Or something like that.
 
HTMLHTML or Hyper Text Markup Language is the main language used for websites. It’s written in short codes or tags surrounded by < and > which give instructions as to how the word or image will appear: <strong> these words will be bold </strong> and these will not. :-( means you don’t get it.
 
InfluencersInfluencers are trendsetters who let everyone know their thoughts and opinions via various online message boards, forums and blogs. The right influencers behind your product or service can build a brand quicker than you can say ‘I’m under the influence’.
