Don’t know your podcasting from your vodcasting? Confused as to the meaning of search engine optimisation? And what exactly is a blog? Or blogging? Or the blogosphere?

Here for the first time, in our fabulous Online PR and Social Media Glossary (phew), are our slightly tongue-in-cheek definitions for all the latest buzzwords doing the rounds.

(And writing them kept the immediate future team amused for at least a whole afternoon!)

Term Definition
Web 2.0Web 1.0 was created by a few people for the masses. Web 2.0 is being created by the people for the people using second generation web based services such as blogs, wikis and social networks. It’s a brave new world out there people. 
 
Web analyticsWeb analytics is the process of collecting data about the activities of visitors to your website. How they found you; what they bought; what pages they looked at; what they downloaded; what they had for breakfast. That sort of thing.
 
Web feedFeeds or web feeds, such as RSS or Atom, allow you to read, listen or watch new content on a blog or a website without having to revisit that site. It’s a bit like getting a take-out when you can’t be bothered to go the actual restaurant.
 
WeblogAlthough now being used by businesses, a weblog or blog is more often than not a frequently updated personal online journal kept by a blogger. Entries or posts are in reverse chronological order and can be insightful, witty and philosophical. Or maybe not.  
 
WidgetA Widget is a piece of code that enables you to pull in data from another website onto your own site or blog which is then constantly updated. For example, news headlines; local weather; footie scores. So all the really important stuff you need to keep up to date with.
